Natural Therapies
Whilst Western medicine is deeply entrenched in the healthcare of industrialized countries, natural therapies are increasingly being seen as either complimentary to or as an alternative to this form of medicine.
Naturopathy is a system of alternative therapies, which are based on the principle that the body can intrinsically heal itself, and addresses all aspects of a person's wellness, such as the emotional as well as the physical elements. It is concerned with the causes of pain and disease, not just the alleviation of these. Complimentary medicine aims to use the innate recuperative powers of the human body to restore or maintain health. Diet and lifestyle are seen as vital in keeping a healthy balance.
Natural remedies, however, are not generally a modern phenomenon and have been used and developed over thousands of years. Modern Naturopathy has its basis in the practices of Ancient Greece. The Ancient Romans introduced water treatments (hydrotherapy) to the UK, together with the formalised use of herbs to treat illness. Traditional Chinese treatments, such as acupuncture have seen a dramatic rise in popularity in the West, with the increase in immigration by Chinese practitioners into Western countries, especially in the last 30 years, though these health practices have been used for over 3000 years, dating back as far as the Stone Age. Acupuncture aims to relieve pain or offer therapeutic assistance through the use of needles which are manipulated into points in the body through which the "vital energy" flows. Bone manipulation therapies, such as osteopathy and chiropractic, are based on ancient "bone setting" methods, used in the 15 th century by English friars. Massage therapy, to treat illness, fatigue or injury, was used in many ancient cultures, including Greek, Roman and Chinese societies.
