Research Maha Bandha (the great lock) & Trataka technique & explore how effects blood pressure & contraindications & benefits.

Maha bandha is the fourth bandha. The first three are Mula bandha (base/root lock), Uddiyana bandha (abdominal lift lock) and Jalandhara bandha (throat lock). The bandha’s are locks that help contain Pranic energy within the body and redirect its flow. Maha bandha is simply the combination of the first three locks actively used simultaneously. Maha bandha creates heat in the body and precautions must be taken when practicing this technique for instance persons with high blood pressure should avoid this as the compression and excess heat created could impact these conditions. Women who are pregnant can practice Mula bandha as this can actual help strengthen the base muscles which help support the excess pressure from carrying a baby. Additionally having strenghtened these muscles will help the mother once she has given birth, reducing the chances of bladder weakness and so on. Pregnant women should not practice Uddiyana bandha or Jalandhara bandas as these can create to much internal heat and pressure on the uterus.

The benefits of practicing the bandhas are as follows:
COMBINED BENEFITS:
•	Restorative
•	Increased energy through conservation, containing & redirecting energy
•	Strengthening & lengthening
•	Improves overall function of all bodily systems

MULA BANDHA
•	Protects the muscles of the lower back & helps hinging action in forward bends
•	Helps contain energy & reduce leakage of pranha
•	Potentially enhances sexual experience

UDDIYANA BANDHA
•	Internal massage of the digestive tract & organs
•	Strengthens & lengthens the abdominal muscles creating space for the organs & helping to protect the back muscles through support & stability
•	Upward lifting action assists the compression of the diaphragm against the inhalation pressure of the lungs
•	Helps lymph move to its major organs

JALANDHARA BANDHA
•	Squeezes into the Thyroid & para-thyroid aiding there functioning & can assist in regulating hormone production & energizing
•	This final lock full assists the trapping of energy in the body building heat and increasing pressure
•	Assists the spine to lengthen and release to help the pranic current flow easily up the spine, this is also good for the function of the CNS

Trataka technique
The Trataka technique is a form of meditation it involves centering one awareness on an object such as a candle whilst meditating. So one focuses the eyes on the object and gently gazing at it one settles into a meditative state. This is a great technique for beginners as it encourages single pointed awareness and focused concentration. This technique can improve eyesight and the optic function.

Approx. 30 seconds to 1 minute for beginners is an adequate amount of time in this pose to give a good squeeze and soak. Several minutes for intermediate to advanced students is fine as they are perhaps more flexible and their body is used to this action and its intensity. http://www.yogajournal.com/poses/485

It is best to be somewhat warmed prior to commencing this twist to protect the neck and back muscles and also to achieve a deeper twist. Some good preparatory poses would be Ardo Mukha Svanasana (Downward facing dog) stretches out the necessary muscle groups, Uttanasana (standing forward bend) is a beneficial gentler pose as it also helps to lengthen the back. Utthita Trikonasana also stretches out the sides of the torso and is good in leading up to this pose.

Describe necessary counter poses for the asana (if any). Why are these important?

Twists providing they are performed evenly on both sides for the same duration are counter balancing and do not necessarily need any counter poses. Some forward bending can be nice to release the spine and offer further compression and space for the abdominal organs. Janu sirsasana (head-to-knee) or Paschimottanasana (intense stretch of the west) or Upavistha Konasana (seated wide angle pose) can be useful as they are all performed on the floor. One feels safe and nurtured coming forward into these poses after what can be intense for some and being on the floor they sequence well with this posture.

Describe contraindications and explain why they are contraindicated in the context of the pose.

Students who are pregnant should not practice this pose as soon as they know they are pregnant, as it places to much pressure on the uterus. People with back problems like slipped discs or herniated discs should avoid this posture alternative poses should be used depending on the injury. Other contraindications include any digestive issues like diarrhea, acid reflux etc. however Arda Matsyendrasana can relieve constipation as it stimulates and aids digestive function. When practicing Arda Matsyendrasana one should be careful not to force the neck by twisting it too far it is much better for the twist to occur through the back and for the neck not to be force to avoid injury. AYA notes, Twists, page 6 Kaminoff, Leslie, 2007, Yoga Anatomy, Human Kinetics, USA

For a beginner or someone with physical ailments the pose can be revised. One can practice with one or both legs stretched out. If both legs are stretched out the hand that is not placed behind the buttocks/back presses against the outside of the corresponding leg to assist with the deepening of the stretch. A block can also be placed behind the student to assist. The pose could also be performed on a chair, one arm behind the back and the back of the other hand pressing against the outside of the leg to assist with leverage in the twist.

To bind in this pose certainly increases the stretch and deepens the twist, one could provide gentle adjustments to help a deepen the pose for more advanced students. More focus can be applied to the isolating muscle groups around the spine and the rotating of the torso and lengthening of the spine. Additionally, the pose could be held for longer. There are of course deeper twists also available to more advanced student such h as Marichyasana or revolved triangle pose. AYA notes, Twists, page 6

Describe the benefits of the asana

Skeletal

Space is created between the vertebrae and discs in the Spine with this twist. This lengthens the spine and can improve the posture. The twist creates space and a rotational release in the thoracic spine. The movement of the spinal cord promotes synovial fluid coating and lubricating the joints. The rotation separates the vertebrae slightly allowing the discs to soak up fresh blood. Dr Raman, Krishna, East west books, Chennai (Madras) 1998A matter of health Kaminoff, Leslie, 2007 page 97-99 http://www.getbodysmart.com/ap

Muscular

The muscles are stretched and contracted evenly on both sides providing the pose is mirrored. This allows for great balancing and strengthening of the Abdominal muscles, Latissimus dorsi, rectus abdominus, STM muscle, shoulder muscles and hamstrings. Therefore opening and creating space whilst also squeezing the organs of the abdominal and pelvic region. Twists keep your spinal joints, disks, ligaments, and muscles supple. So many muscles of the back are opened strengthened and lengthen in this pose, it is therefore is very good for encouraging a healthy posture. Dr Raman, Krishna, East west books, Chennai (Madras) 1998A matter of health http://www.yogajournal.com/practice/2790

Lymphatic

The lymphatic system is able to drain in this pose. The pressure of the squeeze/soak on the diaphragm is also assisting the movement of lymphatic fluids, as the major lymphatic organs (the spleen & the thymus) are based around the thoracic spine area, behind the diaphragm. The twisting action is beneficial to releasing any toxins from the lymphatic system.

Cardiovascular

Arda Matsyendrasana opens the chest creating space in this asana. This assists in improving blood flow. The balancing effect created by twists in combination with controlled breathing increases Para-sympathetic dominance. Anxiety energetically sits at the heart, so a para-sympathetic state slows the heart rate and helps the person to relax the surrounding muscles of the heart and slow down the heart rate.

Digestion

Twists compress abdominal organs including the liver, digestive system, pancreas and kidneys. The compression bring fresh oxygenated blood to these organs, enhancing their function and helping to move waste through the digestive tract. The opposing stretch and opening that occurs creates space and helps muscles around these organs to relax and function is thereby enhanced.

Endocrine

Arda Matsyendrasana stimulates the endocrine system, particularly the abdominal organs. The pancreas is compressed and the gentle twist assists its function in hormone production and digestive enzymes. The ovaries also receive a good “squeeze and soak” through the compression teamed with a gentle twist. The chest is broadened in this pose helping to open up the thymus. Fresh oxygen carrying blood cells are delivered improving overall function to these areas. The bodies hormones are not depleted in the practice of yoga. Dr Raman, Krishna, East west books, Chennai (Madras) 1998A matter of health AYA notes, Asana Endocrine system, pages 1-8

Nervous system

Twists are neutral in both creating heat and cooling simultaneously. They encourage us to harmonize our energies, and combined with breathing they encourage a para-sympathetic state of the nervous system. This can be extremely beneficial for people suffering from depression, anxiety and fatigue. The central nervous system is stimulated in that the spine vertebrae extend and open up allowing an increase of blood supply to all the tiny nerve endings along the spine assisting their function and the flow of blood and energy along the spinal column.

Energetic anatomy

Twisting are both heating (yang) and cooling (yin) and therefore can assist in creating balance between the inside and outside worlds. The more you relax into the twist on every out breath, the further the body can go. It is amazing how many extra inches can be found through totally letting go and releasing oneself into such a pose. Mental release (letting go) can also be encouraged through the compression of the digestive organs, which may assist with the digesting of experiences. The middle energy centers/ chakras are mostly impacted being the heart, solar plexus and sacral chakras. “The intense squeeze and soak” effect created through the internal organs pressurizing one side and stretching out another can perhaps assist with releasing any emotions sitting within these organs being impacted. For instance the liver (which really benefits from this in the winter “liver season”) could receive some rejuvenation and may release some repressed emotions such as fear, anger or insecurity. Things can bubble up to the surface where they can be consciously processed and released.” The same applies to the solar plexus where people tend to store “emotional baggage”. It is central in the body, our inner sun and can store a lot of psychic emotional excess. The twisting/compression/stretching of this area could assist in releasing emotions that are being stored at a cellular level and no longer serving us. The sacral chakra is relative to twists, its compression can improve the function of sexual organs and assist with related ailments and can potentially help unlock creative energies.

Many herbs have properties that make them effective as an antiseptic. These herbs are natural, and often very cost effective, with fewer side effects.

-Bergamot-is indigenous to North America. The leaves are used as is the oil, which is extracted from the entire plant. This oil contains thymol. It is useful as an antiseptic, tonic, antispasmodic and aromatic. An infusion made from the leaves can be used as a tea, for coughs, colds, fever and sore throats.

-Camphor- is found in Japan, China, and East Asia. An oil and the gum of this plant are used as a sedative, antispasmodic or antiseptic. It is helpful in treating colds, fevers, diarrhea and inflammatory problems. It can be taken internally for nervous complaints. Large doses of camphor, though, could cause vomiting or convulsions, as it affects the brain.

-Cinnamon-is native to Sri Lanka. The bark is used as an antiseptic, astringent and aromatic. It can be used alone as a powder or as an infusion combined with other herbs. Cinnamon relieves flatulence and stops vomiting and nausea. It is administered as a powder, essential oil or tincture.

-Echinacea-is cultivated in Britain, though native to the prairie areas of the US, west of Ohio. The dried root and the rhizome are used. The bark and the wood contain oil, resin and large quantities of useful components. It is an antiseptic. It also boosts the immune system, and increases the body’s resistance to infection. Considered sacred by many of the North American Indian tribes, it can be used to treat septicaemia and boils, as well as infectious fevers. This herb can also improve digestion and appetite. It is administered as a fresh herb, poultice, infusion or injection.

-Eucalyptus-it’s common name is the blue gum or stringy bark. The oil is distilled from the leaves, to extract the eucalyptol, which is the active chemical. This oil is used as an antiseptic gargle. It can also be taken internally for pulmonary tuberculosis and various fevers, or as an inhalant to clear catarrh, or ease sore throats. Large doses taken internally, though, cause kidney or nervous system problems, or may cause death.

-Garlic-the bulb has been used since ancient times as an antiseptic, diuretic and stimulant. It can be applied externally as a lotion or ointment, or poultice, to treat infection.

-Olive-native to Mediterranean countries, Turkey and Syria, it is now also grown in Australia, Chile and Peru. Oil is expressed from the fruit and the leaves, being useful for rheumatic problems or sprains. The leaves have antiseptic properties, with an infusion being beneficial in treating fevers. When combined with alcohol, the oil is also used as a hair tonic.

-Sandalwood-the wood oil is an antiseptic, given internally for chronic mucous conditions, such as bronchitis and inflammation of the bladder.

-Thyme-the oil of thyme leaves is an effective antiseptic and antispasmodic. An infusion or tea of the leaves is good for sore throats, fevers and colds.

-Violets-this small purple flower is native to Great Britain, though is found throughout Europe, Asia and Nth America. The flowers are used either fresh or dried, as are the leaves. A syrup is used to cure eye inflammation and treat pleurisy. The seeds have a diuretic and purgative effect. A poultice can be used on infections.

Psoriasis is a common skin condition, which results in patches of scaley, rough skin. There are several types ans so treatment need to be varied accordingly. Natural treatments include:

-Reducing triggers that can make the psoriasis worse. Many factors can cause a flare-up. Try to prevent injuries such as cuts. Depression, stress and other psychological disturbances can exacerbate symptoms, and so relaxation techniques should be used.

-Sunlight is known to help many sufferers, though not all. Try small amounts of moderate sun exposure, especially in Winter when the condition may flare.

-Oils and oily soaps help to keep the skin moist, soften the brittle patches and leave a protective film on the skin. Many natural oils can be tried, such as avocado oil.or even vegetable oils.

-Tar preparations can be very successful. Tar is a black, oily liquid produced through the distillation of wood or oil. Only a small amount is required, within a base of oil or ointment.

-Vitamin B12 MAY assist some forms of psoriasis.

-Vitamin A (retinol) is found in dairy products and animal tissue such as liver. It is also manufactured in the body from carotene (carrots, tomatoes). It is very good for the skin in many respects and so Vitamin A acid (retinoic acid) can be helpful for psoriasis.

-Spas or health resorts offer sunlight, and often mineral waters with healing properties. Relaxation through meditation or massage is usually offered, which together with the calming scenery and correct diet, all provide many benefits for the skin condition and general wellbeing.

Basil-an infusion is used to treat vomiting and nausea, and also mild nervous conditions.

Blackcurrant-used as a diuretic. The juice is good for febrile diseases, and for sore throats.

Cacao-the ground seeds, with sugar and starch added, produces cocoa. This cocoa butter is an emollient, and useful for chapped lips and hands. The butter also acts as a caffeine-like stimulant and diuretic, and helps to lower blood pressure.

Cardamon-the seeds contain oil, potassium, and lignin. They aid in the relief of colic, headaches and indigestion.

Cayenne-this pepper is a powerful stimulant and encourages blood circulation, and also acts as a tonic to help prevent colds.

Eucalyptus-the oil is widely used as a very effective antiseptic. It is used for fever when taken internally, (with care), and as an inhalant to ease croup.

Fig-an ingredient in laxatives. Roasted figs can be used as a poultice on abscesses and boils.

Ginger-very effective in treating diarrhea, flatulence, and nausea. It can be taken as a tea or as a confection, or in other forms such as a powder.

Parsley-a strong drink made from the root can be used to treat jaundice, kidney congestion, and dropsy. A poultice of the leaves can be used on stings.

Rosemary-the essential oil is used to treat headaches, colds, and nervous depression. It can also be rubbed into the scalp to treat dandruff.

Thyme-an infusion of dried thyme is beneficial for sore throats, colic and catarrh, and also for treating colds.

-stress

-poor diet

deficiencies in vitamins such as Vitamin A, and zinc.

Natural Treatments

There are any forms of treatment that can be tried.

-Aromatherapy can assist in reducing the symptoms, when applied twice per day. With a base of 25 ml of oil, add four drops of geranium, chamomile and juniper berry oil.

-Relaxation techniques can help to reduce stress.

-Lanolin may aggravate symptoms and so should be avoided, including creams containing lanolin.

-Seek help from a doctor or naturopath in identifying any food sensitivities or allergies.

-Soap should also be avoided, and deodorants containing metallic salts. These can also irritate sensitive skin.

-A bath of warm water, to which two cups of ground oatmeal have been added, can help to reduce the itching and redness of symptoms. Two tablespoons of bicarb of soda may also be used.

-Softened cabbage leaves applied to the affected areas soothe inflamed skin.

-Cold-pressed oils such as apricot or wheatgerm are effective and non-irritating.

-Avoid drying environments such as those caused by air conditioners.

-Cold water compresses are useful in reducing itching and inflammation.

Recently several small companies have also developed promising natural treatment creams and cleansers, which are available online. Western medicine, though, may sometimes be necessary in the short term to control severe cases, with such medicines as hydrocortisone cream.

Infertility has many causes, some mechanical and others which may be due to metabolic or hormonal reasons. Nutritional imbalances can affect the chances of conceiving and therefore need to be addressed in order to give the greatest possible likelihood.

Possible vitamin imbalances include:

-Vitamin C-when a man’s body is deficient in vitamin C, ‘agglurination’ results, in which the sperm clumps together, and so cannot move as fast as is necessary. Sperm motility and count are, however, increased if men supplement their vitamin C intake with an additional 1,000 mg of the vitamin. It is also helpful in neutralising harmful chemicals from cigarette smoke that affect sperm.

Zinc-testosterone production in the body is reduced if zinc levels are too low. This in turn reduces fertility. Sperm count and motility are also decreased. Increasing the daily intake of zinc by 15 mg normalizes any ill effects. Excessive zinc ingestion, though, can be toxic so medical supervision is necessary, together with blood tests and sperm tests to monitor results. Foods containing good sources of zinc include red meat, seafoods, and whole grains.

Other Nutrients-a balanced diet is also necessary to ensure adequate levels of other nutrients such as iron, the B-group vitamins, Vitamin E (400-800 iu/day), and magnesium. A multi-vitamin supplement may be beneficial in maintaining these at the required levels.

Too much fat in the diet can not only clog the arteries to a man’s heart but also those to his penis! This therefore affects the ability to maintain erections, and thus reduces fertility.

Also, body fat affects hormone levels. For example, underweight women may have too little oestrogen and those who are overweight produce too much to get pregnant. Similarly, heavy men have low levels of testosterone and high levels of oestrogen.

Is There A Cure?

Gluten intolerance (Coeliac’s Disease) is a major cause of illness worldwide. In Australia, over 200,000 people are sufferers, with many more remaining undiagnosed. A sensitivity to gluten may also cause symptoms, and result in ill health for many more people. Currently the only effective treatment is for a sufferer to eliminate gluten from the diet. As this needs to be followed life-long, it is quite restrictive.

Research into this condition is now being undertaken around the world, to understand the disease, with the aim of finding a cure. Exciting findings have recently been identified.

At the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute in Melbourne, a study is under way. First begun nine years ago, it is in collaboration with researchers from Melbourne and Monash Universities, and UK scientists. Promisingly, three protein fragments of gluten have now been identified as those which cause the most toxicity to sufferers of Coliac’s Disease. These peptides (protein fragments) have now been used by a Melbourne biotech company, Nexpep P/L, in order to develop an immunotherapy designed to desensitize suffers to the toxic effects of gluten, in the same way that desensitivity therapy helps allergy suffers. Three other drugs are also under development, which should assist people with Coeliac’s Disease. (Walter and Eliza Hall Institute; Dr Bob Anderson, 2010).

Concurrently, Stamford University Medical Centre has identified a peptide consisting of 33 amino acids. This is very resistant to being further digested, even with prolonged exposure to intestinal enzymes. This peptide is toxic, causing an inflammatory response. The peptide is made of smaller fragments that each can cause an auto-immune response in the body, yet it was found to induce auto-immune activity that was 10-20 times higher than the component fragments did. The scientists theorised that a peptidase (an enzyme that breaks down proteins) would be able to break down the amino acid ‘proline’ in the fragment. In tests conducted, this was shown to occur. Whilst testing on humans will take more years to undertake, it is hoped that peptidase supplementation therapy will assist suffers through dietary means. (Stamford University Medical Centre; Chaitan Khosla, 2010).

Further, Deakin University, also in Melbourne, has several studies being undertaken. Areas of research include studying the effects of gluten on those with a sensitivity to it, rather than an intolerance, and the link gluten plays in the development of schizophrenia.

The current level of interest and research into gluten, and its effects on the body, augers well for significant advancements in the treatment of conditions associated with it.

There are many things that a professional chiropractor can do to help you with your back problems, in fact the expert chiropractor may be the only medical equipped and specially trained person that can provide constant and medically approved relief for back pain and back problems.

There are many different factors that affect the costs and the prices of chiropractor help, it is usually a factor of a few things that we will review in this article, basically you have to pay for the treatment and there are some costs that go above that. Here is a short list of things that may influence the prices of chiropractic treatments.

Nature of treatment – different chiropractors take different approaches to heal a patient’s ailments. The nature of the recommended remedy also affects the chiropractor treatment cost. Some chiropractors may attempt to remedy a problem using massage.

Some chiropractors use heat therapy in order to fix whatever is wrong with a patient. Others make use of water therapy in order to relax the stress felt by a patient that is causing the illness. Still other chiropractors make use of acupuncture in order to heal an ailment.

Depending on the nature and difficulty of the treatment, the chiropractor cost can either be very cheap or very expensive. Some chiropractor treatments make use of x-rays and ultrasound in order to determine what’s wrong. These procedures can add a bit more to the chiropractor treatment cost.

Depending on the nature and difficulty of the treatment, the chiropractor cost can either be very cheap or very expensive. Some chiropractor treatments make use of x-rays and ultrasound in order to determine what’s wrong. These procedures can add a bit more to the chiropractor treatment cost.

4) Demand – demand affects everything that’s on the market. If a practitioner is in demand, then chiropractor treatment costs could go up. This is the very same reason why chiropractors who are based in populated areas tend to charge higher than those who practice in rural areas.

5) Insurance – Most types of insurance today do not cover chiropractor treatment costs. This, of course, affects the demand for their services. As a result, the chiropractor treatment costs go down.

In general, Chiropractor treatment costs are affected by the quality of life. It is often the case that people who cannot afford to see a doctor would go to a chiropractor with the hope of finding a solution to their ailment. The greatest asset that chiropractors have is compassion. They are able to connect with people in such a way that they are able to give the impression of a proven science. In fact, many practitioners would argue that they are doctors of a proven science. And who could prove or disprove this claim? The answer to that is no one, except the patients and the chiropractors.

Chiropractors are back pain specialists, they can deal with most of the areas that project sharp pain to a lot of people, you can learn how you can be helped by an expert Chiropractor and solve your back problems.
